Our mission is to empower the development & advancement of underrepresented firefighters through training and mentorship, to be a positive and active force in our community through volunteering & partnerships, and to increase awareness of the firefighting career through recruitment activities.
Originally founded in 1984, The Fraternal Order of Progressive Firefighters was the first organization created by black firefighters to express concerns and address issues being faced by minorities on the department (Charlotte Fire). The Progressive Firefighters felt compelled as an organization to study and help solve such problems and to take their place in the vanguard of civilization, by cultivating and maintaining professional competence among Firefighters while establishing unity and fellowship among their members, for the purpose of improving the social status and professional efficiency within.
Although many of those issues have been resolved, there remain struggles with the recruitment, promotion, and acceptance of black and brown firefighters. 40 years later, TheĀ NeptuneĀ Fire Society emerges to continue this important work, never forgetting how or why we started.
The Charlotte Fire Department has over 43 fire stations in Mecklenburg County, North Carolina. For a detailed list of all of the Fire Stations, click here
